KEYTA supports Senate Bill 371 and House Bill 785, legislation that would require public school entities to notify teachers of their rights regarding union membership and fees. Both legislative proposals would require that school districts notify all employees that any payment they make to a union is voluntary. On June 27, 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court established in their Janus v. AFSCME ruling, that teachers are no longer obligated to pay the unions their so-called “fair share fee,” if they choose to abstain from union membership. This is now known as “Janus Rights.” However, the ruling did not require school employers or the unions to notify school faculties and staff of their right to withdraw from an organization whose goals and values do not align with their own. SB 371 and HB 785 provide an opportunity for educators to hear about their constitutional rights.
