The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has introduced a new initiative called “You’ve Got a Friend in Pennsylvania,” featuring an automated phone line for people of all ages to receive pep talks, jokes, and words of encouragement from students across the state. Dr. Khalid N. Mumin, Secretary of Education, highlighted the importance of spreading cheer and promoting mental health during the holiday season. The phone line, accessible at (717) 772-4737, offers a range of options for callers to hear advice, encouragement, and jokes from students in grades K-12. The fully automated system ensures the privacy of the students, with their names and details kept confidential. The initiative aims to support individuals dealing with mental health challenges, particularly during the holiday season when conditions may worsen for many. In light of this, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides recommendations for maintaining mental health, including paying attention to feelings, practicing self-care, connecting with the community, and knowing when to seek help.
