Teacher Strike

If your school district should strike, non-union teachers usually decide to not walk the picket line. However, if you choose to join your union colleagues, you are welcome to. The Keystone Teachers Association does not take an official position on teacher strikes, because in the rarest of instances, a strike may be necessary.

During a strike, most, if not all, non-union teachers stay home and do not report for work on the strike day. When a teacher strike occurs, the schools are shut down until the strike is over. School administrators usually have no way of knowing if you are actively participating in the strike. Therefore, all teachers are treated equally and your pay will be suspended. If you choose to report to work, there will be no students to teach and you will most likely be sent home. These strike days are made up at the end of the school year, and that is when your compensation will be made up as well.

PLEASE NOTE: It is not mandatory that non-union teachers be required to teach or cross the picket line during a strike. It is also not required that non-union members inform their administration of their non-union status, their participation, or non-participation, in the strike.
