Mask Mandate Authority to Return to Local School Officials in January

On November 8, 2021, Governor Wolf announced in a press release his intention to return the power of Pennsylvania’s K-12 school mask requirement back to the individual school officials on January 17, 2022.

The current mask mandate, issued by PA Department of Health Secretary Alison Beam, went into effect on September 7, 2021. Today’s announcement will reverse the current mandate.

Upon the mandate’s expiration, school leaders will again be able to decide the mitigation efforts at the local level.

Governor Wolf stated that Pennsylvania has more than 70% of adults ages 18 and older fully vaccinated and children 5 and older are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

The current mask mandate for early learning programs and childcare facilities is not part of this announcement and will remain in place until further notice.
