House Bill 1897, also known as School District Cyber Education, would close all cyber schools currently in Pennsylvania and require each school district to offer their own full-time cyber education program. Under the bill, current cyber charter schools will be able to serve as third-party vendors; however, school districts must also create their own full-time cyber education program. Even once a school district creates their own program, they must still provide at least two alternative third-party, full-time cyber programs oPther than the district’s intermediate unit or another school district.
Representative Curt Sonney, the bill’s prime sponsor stated, “The goal of my legislation is to offer students access to high-quality cyber education programs in a way that is accountable and transparent to local communities.”
