The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) announced on June 3 that elementary and secondary schools in the state’s yellow and green phases may resume in-person instruction and activities beginning July 1. The phased reopening approach first requires schools to develop health and safety plans based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and the state Department of Health.
School plans must encompass several elements, to include:
- Identifying a pandemic coordinator or team.
- Steps to protect high-risk children and staff.
- Processes for monitoring students and staff for symptoms.
- Guidelines for hygiene practices.
- Processes for cleaning and disinfecting.
- Plans addressing the use of face masks.
- Protocols for social distancing, and procedures for restricting large gatherings.
The plans must be approved by local school boards, posted on the school or district public website before a school reopens, and submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
The Department has posted preliminary guidance measures as a starting point for schools to use as they prepare to reopen, but they also plan on releasing additional guidance procedures in the near future.
The Keystone Teachers Association will continue to issue updates on Pennsylvania’s school reopening process as they become available.
