Dear KEYTA Member,
I hope you’re all sitting down for this next statement: as of the date of publication, I do not have a full-time teaching position. (After “retiring,” I did spend my first two years taking full-time roles—just for two months at a time!) I even had a false start this summer, when a district secretary called to say their offer had been rescinded.
I trust your summer was both restful and rejuvenating, and that the school year is off to a strong beginning. Please know how deeply you impact the lives of your students—your work truly matters.
Last Friday was my first day back subbing. On a whim, I asked a group of juniors and seniors if any were considering becoming teachers. To my delight, several said yes! I encourage you to plant that same seed with your own students. If you discover one or two who are genuinely interested, mentor them. Stay in touch as they head to college and begin their careers. Be honest about the challenges, but also share the joy this profession can bring.
For me, the call to teach came early. In eighth and ninth grade, my math teacher and soccer coach, Mr. Fuller, inspired me. It’s no surprise that I eventually became both a math teacher and a soccer coach. Later, in high school, my Spanish teacher, Sra. Simonton, invited me to lead a few lessons myself—another moment that solidified my path.
Teachers, I know your plates are full. But please keep an eye out for the next generation. Be that teacher who inspires someone else to follow in your footsteps. Thank you for all you do—not just for your students, but also for your colleagues. And remember, KEYTA is here to support you whenever you need it.
Wishing you a wonderful start to the school year!
With gratitude,
Dennis Shambaugh
